AMERICAN SCHOOL SYSTEM

AMERICANS AT SCHOOL

The school system in the Usa is different from Brazil. First I am going to write about Elementary school: Grades 1 – 6. American children go to Elementary school when thy are six years old. In most parts of the country, elementar schools also have Kindergartens for five years old. Pre-schools for children younger than five. It is not obligatory American children go to school before six. In a public elementar schools boys and girls are in the same class, with between 15 and 30 students.

KINDERGARTEN SCHOOL

HIGH SCHOOL: Grades 7 – 12
Children go to school to learn many things like: to read, to write. To make friends, to use free time well and to study alone. In Junior high school ( grades 7 – 8 ) and in high school ( grades 9 – 12 ) these are importante lessons. In the USA, teachers stay in their classrooms while students go grom class to class. Every high school, student has a guidance counselor. In American high schools, it is so importante a social life and sports, too. American learn sport as parto f their education. Every classroom has na American flag in it. When students graduate from high school, each of them gets a prize. Afterwards the graduating class has a big party, or “prom”, graduation is the greatest ceremony of all in American schools.

                                                                   HIGH SCHOOL

PRIVATE SCHOOLS
Private does not mean better. But it does mean expensive. Most private schools accept only children who already doing well in school and are able to work quietly. Classes are often quieter and less crowded than classes in public schools. Only about 17 percent of American children are sent to private schools.
                                                     PRIVATE SCHOOL

BLACK AND WHITES IN SCHOOL
In the old days black and White children did not go to the same schools. Black people fought against it. Luther King Jr help them. He was a great leader.

THE MELTING POT
The United States is the big “Melting Pot” of countries. In a melting pot, different metals are melted together to make a new stringer metal. The USA is like a “melting pot” for people. In the past people from many different European countries came to the USA. Today people are still coming to live in the US.
TESTS, MARKS AND REPORT CARDS
In the United States students take many tests each year. The tests that students take also their their teachers and schools. Teachers gave tests for the students if,the students pass, they go on to the next grade. But these tests also show if teachers are doing well.
Most American schools give the following marks: A=91 -100; B=81 – 90;  C=71 -80; D=65 – 70; E=50 – 64, and F below 50 percent. Students get report cards four times a year, one copy is sent to the parentes and the school keeps a copy.

                                              YALE UNIVERSITY IN THE USA

CHOOSING A COLLEGE
The students wite letters to three or four colleges and sending in forms. College accept only students who have done well in high school. The college interviews the students. Most college students live on the campus.

  THE 4th OF JULY

Today is the 4th of July. I am celebrating with my family. It is my favorite holiday. I wake up early in the morning. I go swimming with my brother. We have a pool in our backyard. It is very hot outside. The pool feels nice and cool.  After I go swimming, I go to the farmer's market with my mom. We buy a lot of fruit and vegetables from the farmers. We buy the biggest watermelon I have seen. Everybody is excited to celebrate the 4th of July! Next, we go to Grandma's house. We are having a picnic with the whole family. Grandma cooks a lot of good food. I eat a hot dog, potato salad, and watermelon. My cousins are there, too. We play tag. When it starts to get dark, we walk to the park. It is time for my favorite part of the day: the fireworks show!
I love this part of the day, because the sky is so beautiful when the fireworks show start. You can see different colors at the sky. There are many people waiting for this. The whole of my family are here and some friends, too. The 4th of July is the day that we celebrate the Independence of the USA. I am so proud with my country. To tell the truth I love it.
THE BEACH TRIP

I had a fun day today. I went to the beach with my family. It was my first time I had gone to the beach in North Carolina.
We woke up early  and drove for two hours until we reached the beach. There was a lot of traffic. We finally found a parking spot and walked to the sand. It was pretty outside and the beach was very crowded. There were a lot of kids playing. My dad set up a big umbrella. I laid my towel out on the sand. My mom helped me put on sunscreen. I didn't want to get sunburned. I walked down the water and stuck my toes in. The water was warm. It felt good. I walked back to my family and told my brother to come swimming with me.
"I don't want to," he said
"Why not?" I asked.
"I'm afraid of sharks," he said.
I smiled when I heard my brother. Then I asked him:
"Why do you think there are sharks here?"
"My friend told he was here and he saw some sharks here," he said.
"Oh my goodness. It can be just a joke. Don't be afraid, let's go," I said.
Then we went swimming, played ball on the sand and we enjoyed so much. After my family and I went to a restaurant to have lunch. I loved this day with my family.

                                                    SUMMER  CAMP

The first thing that we did was go on a nature hike. The hike was long. We walked through the entire park. I saw two squirrels and a rabbit. I was afraid that I was going to see a snake. It was Hot and I got a lot of bug bites.
After the hike, we had arts and crafts. I made a bookmark to take home with me. I colored it blue and used a lot of glitter.
After arts and crafts, we played my favorite game!
On the second day , we played soccer. It was so funny. The most of the girls didn't know how to play, but I thought we enjoyed very much.
In the end of the day we swam at the lake and at night everybody was so tired.

 THE SNOW DAY

My sister woke me up early this morning. She ran into my room before the alarm clock went off.
"Look outside!" she yelled. I got out of bed and looked out the window. All that I could see was white snow! There was a man shoveling the sidewalk in front of our house. Mom came into the room. She brought us mug of hot chocolate.
"No school today!" she said. I was very happy. My sister was happy, too. Mom left the room to find our snow clothes. She gave me my blue snowsuit. She also gave me a hat and mittens.
"What are you going to do today with no school?" she asked.
I thought about it for a few minutes and then I told my mother.
"First I am going to sleep more and after I'm going to read a good book. I think it is the best idea in a snowy day."
My sister prefered to clean her bedroom, she said it was a real mess, she is so organized. My mother smiled. My sister and I are so different. My mother agreed with us.

FINDING MUFFIN

I am having a bad day today. I woke up this morning and my mom told me that my dog, Muffin, is missing. Muffin lives outside in our backyard. The door of the fence that surrounds our backyard was open this morning when my mom woke up. My mom walked around our neighborhood and called Muffin's name but he did not come home. She asked allof our neighbors but no one has seen Muffin since yesterday.
I decided that I am going to make signs to hang all over town, so if someone finds Muffin, they can call my family. I called my next door neighbor, Kelly, to see if she wanted to help me make signs. Kelly came over and we made signs with a picture of Muffin and my phone number. Muffin is a big, friendly Golden Retriever. He is five years old but he still acts like a puppy. Before we left to hang up our signs, I put a bowl of Muffin's favorite treats by the fence door.
Kelly and I went to the supermarket first. We asked the cashier if we could hang up a sign on the wall. She said yes and wished us luck. Next we went to the library. The librarian told us that she saw a Golden Retriever walking past the library while she was outside during her lunch break. She said that it was walking in the direction of the playground, so we decided to go there next.
We went to the playground, but first we met a friend of mine, his name is Joe. I told him what had happened and he said that he had seen a dog like Muffin near his house a few minutes ago. I was so hopeful. So, we went with him at his house. He took us at the place where he saw Muffin. Suddenly I heard a dog barking. I turned back and I saw Muffin, he ran to me so happy. We came back to my house with my dog. We were so happy.
NEW YORK - JOHN ESCOTT

SUMMARY

People usually call New York "The Big Apple",because there were many apples on the trees. Then they said: "_When you take New York City, you take The Big Apple". The most of people say it is the most exciting city in the world. In New York, there are five boroughs: Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten Island. But in the beginning the Algonquin Indians lived there. Before it was called New Amsterdam because a Dutchman called Peter Minuit paid the Indians about $24,00 dollars for the island. But in 1776-1783 came the War of Independence,a war between the British and some people of North America. George Washington was the first president of the USA. After that, many people began to go to America from all over the world and many of them went to New York. There are people from different parts of the world in New York, cause of this there is a part in the called Chinatown and another part called Little Italy. This city is full of skyscrapers like: The Empire State Building, The World Trade Center, The United Nations Building. The Statue of Liberty is there, too. It is wonderful. There are different places to have a meal. New Yorkers love parades, there are two big parades there: St.Patrick's Day on March 17 and Macy's Thanksgiving Day on the last thursday in November. When you go to New York remember: don't carry much money, don't travel on the subway alone at night, stay with the crowds late at night, you have to be careful.
